Is your wireless internet connection is safe?
Do you have a wireless connection at home or in the office. Does your firewall security is optimized properly to prevent someone using your wifi. Do you know such unauthorized access can be used for any criminal affiance like cyber crimes or to hack someone’s banking passwords or other illegal works.
Below are the some tricks and tips that you can use to prevent someone accessing your wifi.
1. First of all you should be aware that your access is secure to anyone, well it is fully password protected. Visit to the security center of your router control (today almost every wifi router comes with several security option). Below is the example form the Netgear router the option look like this (Don’t panic if you are not using Netgear, the procedure is somehow same for every router) .
From the above options it is best to use WPA or WPA2 along with a strong pharse password containing a good combination of Uppercase and lowercase combination and with some speciacase characters. After making changes to the router settings you should provide these changes into your Laptop or desktop networking settings which will use this connection. Be careful to provide the same encryption setting and and the passowrd to your destination computer.
We recommend WPA or WPA2, along with a strong Pass-phrase or password. A good password will be one which has a mix of upper-case,lowercase and special characters. After you make these changes on your router, you have to make corresponding changes on your Laptop or Desktops which access this router, to use same encryption settings and same password as shown in the pictures below…
First open the managing wireless connection from the network management in control panel.
Right click onto the icon on which you wnat to save the settings fro the wireless acces and in the opening pop up go to the security tab provide the setting as WAP or the WAP2 and the password you have entered.
2. Never enable the SSID Broadcast as it will stop telling anyone about its prsence. If someone really going connect with this connection he should know its IP and the passwords. This can also be done from the routers security settings.
3. If your router have in built firewall then turn it on.
4. If you have installed a new router don’t forget to change its default password as several companies have their defalt settings and the user name.
5. Always turn off your routerif not in use.
With all these simple precautions you can make your wifi secure for any illegal access.
